For the Love of Growing Up

For the Love of Growing Up *

Between a ten-hour-long train ride and the desire for a summer 2022 passion project, For the Love of Growing Up came to life.

In 23 blurbs and poems, writer Andrea Sun uses what was once the “thoughts” section of her Notes app to explore the uncharted waters of adolescence—the horrifying and beautiful nature of growing up. Each piece is accompanied by artwork developed for this book.

This book would not have been possible without the talent of poet Andrea Sun and artists Hanna Felber, Erin Stockdale, Liz Hogrefe, and Avery Soupios. For this project, I served as the project manager and layout designer.

Four artists find their own meaning in these words, showcasing their individual talents: line sketches, acrylic paint, and abstract drawings. The accompanying visual art examines the dichotomy between universal experience and the individuality of interpretation. For the Love of Growing Up: Thoughts from my Notes App is an ode to adolescence and a testament to the impact of visual and written art.

This project taught me how to delegate and assign (and enforce) deadlines. I learned how to pair poems with artwork and how to create layouts and make design choices that are accessible to all readers.

In the future, I hope to tackle similar types of projects. In particular, some with more artists and a larger variety of work.

I had a lot of fun working on this book, and I look forward to creating the next.
